I was shooting at restaurant in Williamsburg (La Yaca) for Distinction Magazine and noticed this little element in the kitchen. Always hard for me to pass up a subject that includes a little red. I think my grandmothers house was the same way.

Out scouting today and ran into Ms. Lilly
Listening to Randy Newman, “Lover’s Prayer”

Another image I made that day of random shooting. On these types of shoots sometimes you get to give a little direction, sometimes you just have to watch, and anticipate the opportunities. When I saw these boys carrying the colors for the morning secession, and I jumped in front and shot. Not sure I could have ever directed a better moment. I don’t want perfection in this type of approach, I want to capture something that’s real. Real trumps perfection.

Last summer I spent some time at a Y summer day camp and swimming pool/water-park. I was mostly allowed to shoot whatever I liked and this image was selected from that shoot for their 2011 annual report. I do a lot of production shoots that are not supposed to look produced, that’s what I’m paid for. Success depends on many factors, the quality of the basic idea, the budget, preproduction diligence, scouting, location, casting/talent, props, styling, time of day, your crew, post production retouching, the list goes on. Sometimes it’s good to just put yourself in a situation, give a little direction and see what lucky moments you can find, but you better find something that works.
