Beach Dignity

Spent yesterday at the beach working on a personal project, a time lapse video short, and the jury’s out on whether the 17 hours was worth the effort. Well it’s all worth the effort, but not all results, no matter how much the effort, are worth showing. Anyway with the camera pointed one direction, locked down and shooting a frame every 30 seconds (total frame count was 2207), I had a lot of time to watch. It was a good reminder of the universal nature of human kind on a beach. Seems like there’s a large mass of people (no pun intended) who fully lose any sense of dignity, and just well, hang out. Note, unfortunately I ended up seeing far more butt crack than even this view (averting my gaze but not my camera).  I’ve done a lot of advertising tourism lifestyle on various beaches, and I’ve never been handed this idea in a comp. Generally they are attractive couples with perfect parts and perfect kids and perfect beach toys, and perfect skies. I understand the direction, but much of the romance of the beach eventually comes wrapped in this reality. We are just people, but that’s no excuse for not pulling your trunks up.

I’ve been thinking about a time lapse project for a month or two and tomorrow for 16 hours + or -, I”m going to try it out. On the front side I could talk myself out of it, but if it works out it should be fun.

Low Country Boil

We were shooting this Low Country Boil/life style set-up at sunset and to show the art director what the image would look like on the front-lit side I moved the talent off the set and shot a reverse. Had I been after a final image I’d have moved a few things around, but it worked to show the light. Then I saw it in the edit & just liked the feel of everything, except that candle and tea pitcher overlap on the left is making me nuts, and I would have moved the flowers from behind the peaches, and probably the cold slaw too, and the tea glasses aren’t right, and then changed votive  candles, also reversed the table, but other than that, I liked the feeling.

Crew Pounce

Always interesting when I call a break in the shooting how the various crew members (food stylist, make-up, lighting) pounce on the set and talent needs. In this case I happened to take a quick test image to check highlights and today, while editing the work, I got to see the humor in the grab. Poor little girl is looking at that hand held fan in her face like it’s an angel come to rescue her from the heat.

Shot a Strawberry Shortcake today in a children’s lifestyle setting. All went well and then the cast and crew had their way with the prop.

My two hard working assistance (Dan & Andy) rigging a bit of whimsy on the set.
They are good, and I’m glad to have them.
