Diner

It’s always a bit of sport while on location to find the good food in town. Many times there’s no time, but there was last week. By the good fortune of Bacchus, other food gods and a whacky GPS, we ended up at a wonderful funky diner with the extra bonus of good music (that’s the other sport when out on the road). Not only good music, but also a duo playing my favorite instrument, the cello (the term passion is one of the most overused words in the modern lexicon, but it does apply without hyperbole to the cello). I’ve never heard it in a mix like this but it was a pleasure.

I don’t normally drive the equipment, because I take some of my crew. So although I know driving and contending with the van or truck takes some extra work (and I pay them for the effort) I don’t normally deal with it myself. Last week I met my crew on site, so I did the driving…and parking. Makes me appreciate their effort even more.

Hurry up and wait sometimes leaves one staring at the interior design choices of hotels and wondering why?
Facing a cold afternoon on the set, never an easy thing to do to cast or crew, let alone agency & clients. In this cold dry weather, if you listen closely you can hear everyone’s skin cracking.

Packing

Packing gear for a location shoot and the road trip. Equipment is a love/hate relationship, where less is more, but unless you are shooting documentary style, it still adds up to a lot of cases and logistics. In some ways the options are getting better with technology, but they’re also getting more expensive. Still, one has to keep in mind that the agency creative team has probably bled to get this idea all the way to production, and if something needs to be accomplished on set you don’t want the assistant to say we left that gear at the office. So you take as many options as you can. In this case we are driving so the equipment is going in a van; that gives some room to bring extra. It will be cold, but should be fun.

Made this picture a couple years ago in Portsmouth. I get the concept, but it still seems a little odd.

Still adjusting life to the new studio/office space. This morning I walked into the studio early and saw the light on the small tabletop we shot yesterday. I don’t do much shooting in studio, so I’m not used to seeing set ups there, but nice to see the place working and nice to start to feeling comfortable in the space after several months.
