Fine Dining

Most medium and small towns now can boast as good a potential dining as bigger urban centers (within scale). Lynchburg was no exception and when we had time to eat(not often), the food options were outstanding. However our most memorable meal was one we grabbed late afternoon at a place called Hot and Cold. This is Uday Mukherjee, hard working, honorable, unpretentious and a serious chef. He describes his food as Indian Mediterranean Fusion. He makes it by himself in this basic kitchen, and it’s delightful.

Late afternoon light dances around these old buildings like it has for the last hundred or so years. Fortunately they never had enough money to tear down these old majestic souls when they were in disrepair, now they are being renovated.

Head Gear

We had just finished the 2nd day of shooting and while standing along the street discussing the details still remaining in the next day, I noticed this retail window display. Lots of interesting headgear. Given I’m not a cross dresser and my hat had been keeping me fairly warm, or as warm as any other part of me, I wasn’t inclined to make a purchase. Still, I found the variety on display an interesting lot (there’s even a bejeweled turban on the end of the row which would have been interesting had I worn it the next day on the set). Plus they were still open for business. Also there’s this little hand print in the middle of the window, and I’d like to know the story behind that childish smudge. All these intense details while I’m suppose to be listening to the discussions on the next day’s minutia, which I did because I’m suppose to be in charge on this shoot. I think serendipity was in charge(my producer would disagree), but serendipity was generally kind.

Food Shoot

One of the images for the layout was a food shot. I was using the late afternoon light coming through a window (speeds up the process and it always worked pretty well for Vermeer), when I notice the other details on the table that looked beautiful in the same light. Including this napkin.

Lynchburg Fire Boots

One of the pictures on our list was an All-American image of firemen in front of their firehouse. While we had an initial few minutes of introduction, I noticed this pair of boot across the room, so I set the camera on the floor and made a quick image. Didn’t know what I had at the time, but I liked the outcome.

Lynchburg Scenic

The Ad agency had hoped to shoot this project with a more neutral summer look, but it was delayed till fall had obviously arrived. So there we were shooting in this beautiful town with all this fall foliage. Now, I make an effort to avoid the cliché post card moment, (who needs to see that again and again-see flicker), but I remain a sucker for a scenic. I know that’s conflicted but I’ll just go with the moment, and when I see something that might be easy on the eye likely I’ll swing my camera that way and grab an image. No apologies, maybe I’ll just keep it for my own pleasure; there are worse things.

(Note to my friends Adam and Keith, this is the original sky)
