Friday Morning

All the ships gathered in the morning to begin the Parade of Sail. I had an ever-changing front row seat from a helicopter.

Sail Virginia

I was recently asked to shoot a sailing festival in Norfolk with a coffee table book as the end use. Nice opportunity, albeit a grueling project to shoot. The event was called Sail Virginia, a counter point to the Jamestown Exhibition in 1907, which was in celebration of the Jamestown Settlement 400 years ago. Being a historic port our celebrations often involve tall sailing ships. The first work I made was from a helicopter over the ships in the Chesapeake Bay Thursday night before the next morning’s parade of sails. This image is a bit of a sunset post card look, but I’ll mostly put up images that are a little more of my personal impressions to the experience.

Inside The Tanker’s Tanks

I’m working on a shoot of a repair project on a chemical tanker. I’m tasked to find the dramatic big moment, or moments. Last week we scouted the ship to get an idea of how to proceed. I made this picture at the bottom of a ladder looking back up to the hatch hole we climbed through to get in. Interesting, metallic, big, and a different world, even your thoughts echo down there (who needs to hear that?)

Saturday night I went to a party in Virginia Beach. I only knew a couple people there, so it wasn’t my comfort zone, but later in the evening a couple of gifted musicians started playing some music and it made for a fine night.

This is a tree I noticed on the horizon as we packed up after the shoot. Looks like it needs a shave.
Summer, and thoughts on daylight.
Okay the days are getting shorter now, and I have a consideration on this subject. First we spend 3 months waiting for the days to at least become an equal length of daylight and dark. Then we wait 3 months for that longest day. Then it comes and goes in a day and we watch as each day starts getting shorter again. Then there are more hours of dark than light. Finally, we have the longest night of the year, and it’s cold.
Wrap Shot

Here is the crew wrap shot after a long hard road shoot. The haze in the background is remnants from our battlefield smoke cloud that drifted slowly down into Yorktown. The park ranger had already called the fire department to let them know it wasn’t real smoke.
